The South African Musicians Support Association is a non-profit support network and safety net for musicians and others working in the music industry.
Our board and membership is composed of passionate music fans, industry professionals, musicians, journalists and organisations involved in the administration and production of music.
Our main objective is to provide assistance to music industry professionals when they face difficulties that threaten to derail their careers. This assistance could be given in the form of funds, services or volunteer help.
Our secondary objective is to build connections to resources that can address a wide range of personal, financial and professional challenges.
SAMSA focuses the resources and attention of South Africa’s music community on issues that impact the health and welfare of music industry professionals.
We created SAMSA because we love South African music. We’re working hard for South African musicians because we want to keep the music playing!
Mechanical Construction Manager by trade and live music fan for life. Howard Barber loves to give, whether it is a hot cup of coffee on a cold festival morning or a whole-hearted applause at a Sunday afternoon show. Because of this, Howard is loved and appreciated all over the music world in South Africa. When it came time to start thinking about legacy, creating an avenue to assist musicians when they need it most was top on his list. The SA Musicians Support Association has been a needed component for quite some time now and because of Howard Barber’s desire to help out, it is finally becoming a reality.
Having been a performing musician for over 60 years, Michael Canfield knows what a musician’s life is all about. His performances have ranged from the Grammy’s stage, busking in New York City to drumming with a wide range of South African musicians. His energetic, Cajun blues, one-man band show have captured many an audience. Michael knows, no matter whom the musician is, hitting a bump in the road can hurt in more ways than one. Seeing what other organisations across the world have achieved and how they’re assisting musicians in need, Michael decided to share his insight, knowledge and background to start something in SA that will do the same for our own musicians. Michael has also personally been involved in other non-profit organisations and is bringing all of this knowledge to the SAMSA table.
“Making music is not just a hobby, but the real purpose of my life!” The team is fortunate to have Heidi Kriel filling the role of Secretary. Her dedication and commitment to providing assistance and support is as strong as it is to her music. She grew up in a family of musicians that have thrived in South Africa and have been part of the SA music scene for many years. Heidi has always wanted to be able to give back to the music industry and she brings another musician’s “point of view” to the team. Being able to relate to what musicians face during hard times has been a big part of her inspiration and her hope is that SAMSA will make this easier for the future of the industry.
